Steel is traditionally used for gratings for a variety of purposes and reasons including bridge flooring, trench covers, walkways, ramps, platforms, catwalks, mezzanine floors and much more too. As you can imagine, it’s a great material for such things because of its strength and durability. Steel is actually made up of active materials that discourage dislocation at an atomic level. Steel also has properties that mean pests are kept at bay and the material won’t rot. These alone make it a brilliant material for gratings hence the popularity over the years.

There’s a competing material available on the market however and that is Glass Reinforced Plastic or GRP for short. GRP gives steel a run for its money when being manufactured as a grating for a number of reasons and we’d like to discuss a couple of them. GRP is made from strands of glass called fibres that are really fine and woven together to create a flexible fabric.
GRP is also a moulded product, meaning it must be placed in or around the shape of the item it is required to take which is really useful when it comes to gratings. Like steel, this makes GRP a really tough and durable material, perfect for the various uses of a grating.
