  • Performed by: Designed, built and installed by Steelway Fensecure
  • Products: The following Engineered Composites products were used in these projects- All isophthalic polyester, colour grey
    • Box 51 x 51 x 3.25mm
    • Tube 38 x 32 mm
    • Angle 50 x 50 x 5mm
    • Angle 100 x 100 x 8mm

Why Composite Pultrusions?

The prime reason for choosing composite pultrusions was that the profiles have no scrap or recycle value. The installation is remote and easily accessible. The travelling bridges and handrails had been made in aluminium previously; these were all stolen for sale as scrap metal. The lightweight properties of the composite pultrusions was ideal for the travelling scraper bridge, and as it is constantly exposed to water and weather, the corrosion resistant properties were a factor for why composite pultrusions were chosen.

General Site View

The treatment units, of which there are several on the site, includes a travelling scraper unit fixed at the centre and driven from the outer wall. The bridge carries the scrapper unit but also has access to the central bearing that requires safety handrailing. There is also a safety handrail along the weir plate at water level (photo below).

Bridge access safety handrail

Handrail fixed to the bridge structure itselfmade of heavy duty pultruded angle set back to back making a T section. The bridge deck is steel chequerboard plates fixed to the horizontal leg of the angle so that the vertical leg acts as a toe board. Bridge deck stiffened with transverse angle under the deck. Handrail is designed for light duty so 51 x 51 x 3.25mm box is used for the stanchions. Similar handrail can be seen at water level (photo right).
