Project Overview
The construction of the substation, known as Alyth, spanned a period of 28 months, encompassing various stages of planning, design and implementation. Alyth substation, strategically located, is a key element of the SSEN Transmissions’s comprehensive plan to reinforce the East Coast transmission network. Its vital role is to enable the connection of new renewable generation in the north of Scotland to the national power grid, facilitating the efficient transmission of clean energy to where it is needed most.

The substation was designed to have an operational capacity of 275kV initially, with provisions for future expansion to 400kV operational by 2026. This expansion would provide the necessary capacity increase to accommodate significant upcoming renewable energy projects in the region. As part of the substation’s integration with the existing 275kV overhead line (OHL)that stretches from Fetteresso to Tealing and Kincardine, the construction of three new transmission towers was also undertaken.
