What Is a Gigafactory
A gigafactory is a large-scale manufacturing facility built to produce batteries, most commonly lithium-ion cells and packs, at gigawatt-hour scale. The term was popularised by Tesla but is now used industry-wide for any battery cell or pack manufacturing plant operating at that scale. In the UK that means facilities such as AESC’s plant in Sunderland, alongside a pipeline of further sites moving through planning, typically running to hundreds of thousands of square metres with construction programmes measured in single-digit years from groundbreaking to production.

Battery manufacturing also involves genuine chemical handling. Electrolyte production and cell manufacture use solvents and chemistries that steel does not tolerate well over a multi-decade asset life, and the sheer scale of cable and busbar routing across a gigafactory floor makes structural cable management a real design consideration rather than an afterthought. GRP box sections are increasingly specified for exactly this kind of framing and cable containment in large-scale manufacturing environments.
Fire Performance and Fast-Track Programmes
Large-format manufacturing facilities need materials that meet defined fire performance requirements without adding weight or installation time to an already compressed construction programme. GRP access systems achieve a Class 2 fire rating to BS 476 Part 7, in line with EN 13501-1 classification used across enclosed industrial and public-access spaces, and at around a quarter of the weight of an equivalent steel structure, GRP grating and platform systems are considerably faster to handle and install, a genuine advantage given the pace at which gigafactory builds move from groundbreaking to production.
Building for a 50-Year Asset, Not Just a Fast Programme
Battery manufacturing is itself justified on decarbonisation grounds, so the construction specification increasingly has to answer the same brief. GRP offers a 50-plus year design life with maintenance-free performance, no painting, sealing or corrosion treatment required, and is supplied with Environmental Product Declaration data to ISO 14025, supporting BREEAM and LEED credentials where a gigafactory development is pursuing them. Lower embodied carbon than equivalent steel solutions over a comparable design life matters to gigafactory developers in a way it has not always mattered for older industrial building types.
What This Could Look Like in Practice
Consider a UK gigafactory currently moving through construction. The battery assembly hall alone can require several kilometres of walkway and platform access for maintenance and inspection around cell formation and testing lines, all of it specified non-conductive as standard given the electrical environment it sits in. Cable and busbar runs across the floor need framing that will not corrode or need re-coating over the life of the plant, and the construction programme itself is under pressure to move fast without compromising on fire performance or long-term durability.
