  • Post Centres: Typically 1.5 m to 2 m

  • Standard Rail Lengths: 3 m to 6 m (custom sizes available)

  • Fixing Methods: Base plate, side mount or cast-in options

  • Installation: Supplied in modular kits or cut-to-size

  • Colour Options: Yellow as standard, grey or custom RAL available

  • Finish: Smooth or gritted for added slip resistance

  • Electrical Performance: 100% non-conductive

  • Temperature Range: -40°C to +120°C

  • Optional Features: Kick plates, toe boards, and fire-retardant resin options

The system is lightweight, simple to install and ideal for both retrofitting and new construction projects.

Our GRP handrail systems meet key UK and international safety, structural and fire regulations, ensuring suitability for critical applications in public and industrial spaces.

  • BS EN ISO 14122-3 – Guardrails for permanent access to machinery

  • BS 4592-0:2006+A1:2012 – Industrial flooring and stairway edge protection

  • BS 6399 (Part 1) – Loading for building structures

  • BS EN 13501-1 – Fire classification of construction products

  • ASTM E84 (optional) – Flame spread and smoke development rating

  • UV Stability – Tested for long-term outdoor performance

  • Chemical Resistance – Verified against acids, alkalis and salts

  • Tested at Lancaster University – For structural integrity and durability

  • ISO 9001:2015 – Certified manufacturing and quality assurance

  • RoHS and REACH Compliant – Sustainable and environmentally safe

These standards make GRP handrails a reliable choice for elevated access, public safety zones and corrosive or electrically sensitive areas.

Common Applications and Uses of GRP Handrails

GRP handrails are used in a wide variety of environments where safety, durability and low maintenance are essential. Their corrosion resistance, non-conductive properties and long service life make them a preferred alternative to traditional steel or timber systems.

Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants

Installed on walkways, clarifier bridges and bund walls to provide safe access in highly corrosive and chemical-prone environments.

Rail Platforms & Transport Infrastructure

Used along public platforms, depot walkways and staircases where slip prevention, electrical safety and durability are critical.

Rooftop Fall Protection

Ideal for edge protection on rooftops and maintenance zones, GRP handrails offer lightweight safety barriers without overloading roof structures

Industrial Sites & Access Walkways

Installed around plant platforms, loading bays and machinery zones to reduce risk in high-traffic industrial areas.

Marine & Coastal Locations

Resistant to salt, UV and moisture, GRP handrails are suited for jetties, harbours, offshore platforms and other exposed locations.

Electrical Substations & Power Sites

Non-conductive GRP handrails are used for safe perimeter control and equipment access around high-voltage areas.

Whether for new construction or retrofitting, the uses of GRP handrails span across sectors that demand safe, compliant and cost-effective handrail systems.

What Clients Say About Our Company

FAQs About GRP Handrails

What are GRP handrails used for?

GRP handrails are used to provide safe, durable edge protection on walkways, platforms, staircases and rooftops. Common in water treatment plants, railways and industrial facilities, they offer corrosion resistance and electrical safety where traditional metal railings may fail.

Are GRP handrails non-conductive?

Yes. GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) is naturally non-conductive, making it ideal for use near electrical infrastructure, substations and rooftops where contact with power equipment may pose a risk.

How long do GRP handrails last?

GRP handrails typically last 25 years or more with minimal maintenance. They are resistant to UV exposure, corrosion, impact and chemical attack, making them highly reliable in harsh outdoor or industrial environments.

Can GRP handrails be used outdoors?

Absolutely. GRP handrails are weatherproof and UV-stable, making them ideal for long-term outdoor use in marine, rooftop and public access applications.

Are GRP handrails compliant with UK safety standards?

Yes. GRP handrails from Engineered Composites are manufactured to comply with standards including BS EN ISO 14122-3, BS 4592-0 and EN 13501-1 for fire safety. They meet structural loading, fire rating and durability requirements for industrial and public use.

Are modular GRP handrails easy to install?

Yes. Modular GRP handrail systems are designed for fast, low-disruption installation. Supplied in kits or component form, they can be assembled on-site using basic tools without welding or hot works.

Do GRP handrails require maintenance?

Very little. GRP handrails are maintenance-free under normal conditions. They do not require painting, coating or rust protection, and only occasional cleaning is needed to maintain appearance and performance.
