Corrosion-free, non-conductive, and zero maintenance. Modular GRP ladder systems for industrial, infrastructure, rail, and offshore environments.
grp-safety-ladder

The Engineered Composites GRP Vertical Access Ladder System is a modular, pultruded glass reinforced plastic ladder and safety cage solution engineered for fixed access applications. The entire assembly, including side posts, rungs, hoops, cage strips, wall brackets, and top handrail, is manufactured in GRP using a fire retardant polyester and vinyl ester resin system. This eliminates the corrosion, electrical conductivity, and maintenance obligations that come with steel.

The system is supplied in safety yellow (RAL 1023) as standard and is available in eight modular configurations covering installed heights from 2,200 mm to 6,200 mm. Extension modules in 500 mm, 1,000 mm, 2,000 mm, and 3,000 mm increments allow bespoke heights beyond the standard range. All components are mechanically assembled on site using stainless steel fixings with no welding, hot works permits, or specialist tools required.

FAQs About GRP Ladders & Steps

What is a GRP access ladder and where is it used?

A GRP access ladder is a fixed vertical access system manufactured entirely from Glass Reinforced Plastic. Unlike a portable ladder, it is a permanent structure bolted to a wall or structure and designed for repeated daily use. The Engineered Composites GRP Vertical Access Ladder System is used in water treatment facilities, rail infrastructure, chemical processing plants, marine and offshore structures, data centres, industrial buildings, and defence installations. GRP is specified over steel in these environments because it is inherently corrosion resistant, non-conductive, non-magnetic, and requires no maintenance beyond periodic visual inspection.

Why specify a GRP ladder rather than a galvanised steel ladder?

Steel ladders corrode in wet, coastal, and chemically active environments, requiring galvanising, periodic repainting, and ongoing inspection to remain serviceable. In environments with chlorine, H2S, saltwater, or de-icing chemicals, coating failure on steel can occur significantly faster than expected, creating both a safety risk and an unplanned maintenance cost. GRP is inherently resistant to corrosion and most industrial chemicals with no protective coating required. GRP is also non-conductive, removing the need for earthing or bonding in electrical environments such as rail trackside locations and substations. At approximately 25% of the weight of steel, GRP also reduces installation time and manual handling risk.

What standards does the GRP ladder system comply with?

The system is designed to comply with BS EN ISO 14122-4 for fixed ladders, with rung spacing of 300 mm within the compliant range of 225 mm to 300 mm. Structural profiles meet BS EN 13706 for pultruded GRP. The fire retardant resin system meets EN 13501-1. The system is also designed to meet BS 4211, the specification for ladders for permanent access. Engineered Composites is ISO 9001:2015 certified, RISQS accredited for the rail sector, and JOSCAR registered for defence and aerospace procurement.

What heights are available and can custom heights be supplied?

Eight standard configurations cover installed heights from 2,200 mm to 6,200 mm in the LC2500 to LC6000 range. For heights beyond the standard range, four extension modules are available: LA500 (500 mm), LA1000 (1,000 mm), LA2000 (2,000 mm), and LA3000 (3,000 mm). Each extension module includes side posts, rungs, and fixings and connects to any standard configuration. Custom heights, alternative colours, non-standard widths, and bespoke configurations can also be supplied. Contact the ECL technical team with your project dimensions and access requirements.

How is the GRP ladder system installed?

The system is mechanically assembled on site from pre-manufactured pultruded components using standard hand tools and the stainless steel fixings supplied with each configuration kit. No welding, grinding, or hot works permits are required. Wall brackets are fixed to the wall or structure at maximum 1,500 mm centres using M8x80 anchor bolts. Cage hoops are installed at maximum 1,200 mm spacing. The top step and top handrail are installed last to complete the safe access point at the top of the climb. Anchor bolt installation is strongly recommended for all permanent applications.
