KG Site Services Ltd has been working with Engineered Composites on a variety of innovative GRP engineering projects.

The Project
Having purchased the relevant GRP products from Engineered Composites, the first picture (top right) shows GRP access platform across an aerobic tank. This was an interesting design due to the lack of cantilevered supports, the strength coming from vertical M16 anchors at each trimmer, along with saddle brackets either side of each trimmer.
GRP was specified due to the lightweight nature (there was limited lifting ability on this particular site) and also due to GRP’s chemical resistance too.
The 2nd image shows handrail installation around a dosing bund. This was specified as GRP, partly due to chemical resistance and due to the fact GRP was also priced more competitively than comparable galvanised mild steel alternatives.
There was concern pre installation from the top tier client that GRP would not be strong enough, as a senior engineer had visited a GRP handrail installation that flexed considerably.
KGSS used the large 3 hole feet & kept the vertical post spacings to around 1400mm maximum to ensure a rigid product. Once installed, the same engineer examined it and was incredibly impressed, saying it actually felt stronger than the steel handrail elsewhere on the same site.

This yellow access platform is part of a new Net Zero initiative, so GRP’s low carbon credentials were very important here, although the main benefit was the rapid fabrication process. KGSS couldn’t survey this area until the Thursday lunchtime as the cabin wasn’t delivered until then, so nobody knew the door threshold heights or platform size required.
Access was required for the Monday afternoon, and we managed to deliver and assemble the platform on the Friday afternoon (24 hours after the survey) and it was fixed down & commissioned on the Monday morning.
This platform was a totally bespoke job where we built a support framework out of GRP, then floored around an existing motor and fitted access, before the main cover was replaced. GRP was the only option as everything was fitted around the existing structures in a very cramped space.
