GRP Step-Over Crossover System

Pre-Fabricated Crossover Systems for Hazardous and Industrial Environments

step-over-img3

Engineered Composites supplies the GRP Step-Over Crossover System, a fully pre-fabricated access solution designed to allow personnel to safely cross obstacles including pipework, cable trays, conveyors, and low-level barriers in industrial, rail, utility, and chemical environments.

Constructed entirely from Glass Reinforced Plastic, every component of the step-over structural frame, platform, grating treads, and tubular handrail is manufactured from corrosion-resistant composite material. The system presents no electrical conductivity hazard, requires no earthing or bonding, and carries an independent fire classification of EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0. It arrives on site in two or three bolt-together sub-assemblies, ready for installation without welding, grinding, or specialist lifting equipment.

Fourteen standard sizes are available from stock, covering platform heights from 360mm to 1560mm across 1000mm and 1500mm spans. Custom configurations including non-standard heights, wider platforms, inclined approaches, and alternative RAL colours are all available to order.

GRP Step-Over

Why GRP Step-Over?

Non-Conductive and Earthing-Free

GRP presents no electrical conductivity hazard. In rail, substation, and cable-dense environments, a steel step-over must be earthed and bonded. An ECL GRP step-over requires no earthing and presents no electrocution risk under fault conditions.

Corrosion-Free, Zero Maintenance

GRP is inherently inert to moisture, salt, and most industrial chemicals. There is nothing to rust, nothing to repaint, and no scheduled maintenance obligation. Design service life exceeds 25 years in normal industrial conditions.

Pre-Assembled, Fast Installation

The system arrives on site factory-assembled in two or three sub-assemblies. Connection is by stainless bolts only. No welding, no hot work, no specialist lifting. A two-person team can complete installation in under two hours.

The GRP Step-Over is precision-engineered from pultruded and moulded GRP components, combining structural strength with the material advantages of glass reinforced plastic throughout.

Why Choose the GRP Step-Over?

Safe in Electrically Hazardous Environments

GRP has zero electrical conductivity. In rail environments, electrical substations, and facilities with exposed cable runs, a steel step-over must be earthed and bonded. An ECL GRP step-over requires no earthing and presents no electrocution hazard under electrical fault conditions, significantly reducing installation complexity and ongoing compliance obligations.

Corrosion Resistance Without Protective Coatings

Steel corrodes in wet, coastal, and chemically aggressive environments, requiring periodic preparation, recoating, and inspection. GRP is inherently inert to most chemicals and requires no protective coating. There is nothing to rust, nothing to repaint, and no galvanic reaction between components.

Lightweight for Simple, Fast Installation

The GRP step-over is up to 75% lighter than an equivalent steel unit. This means two-person installation without specialist lifting equipment, reduced transport costs, and minimal structural loading concerns on lightweight platforms or suspended floors.

Pre-Assembled, Bolt-Together System

The step-over arrives on site factory-assembled in two or three sub-assemblies. All connections are by A4 stainless bolt only. No welding, grinding, or hot work permits are required. A typical installation is completed by a two-person team in under two hours.

Broad Compliance for Regulated Sectors

The system carries independent fire certification to EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0. Structural profiles meet BS EN 13706. ECL is RISQS accredited for the rail sector, JOSCAR registered for defence, and ISO 9001:2015 certified.

FAQs About GRP Step-Over

What is a GRP step-over crossover system?

A GRP step-over is a pre-fabricated, self-contained access structure designed to allow personnel to safely cross over obstacles such as pipework, cable trays, conveyors, and low-level barriers. Constructed entirely from Glass Reinforced Plastic, the ECL step-over includes a structural frame, platform, grating treads, and tubular handrail, all manufactured from corrosion-resistant composite material. It arrives on site in bolt-together sub-assemblies and requires no welding or specialist lifting to install.

Why choose GRP over steel for a step-over system?

GRP offers three fundamental advantages over steel in industrial and hazardous environments. It is non-conductive, so no earthing or bonding is required in rail, electrical, or cable-dense locations. It is inherently corrosion-resistant, eliminating the painting, recoating, and inspection cycles that steel demands in wet, coastal, or chemically active environments. And it is up to 75% lighter than steel, making two-person installation straightforward without specialist lifting equipment. Once installed, a GRP step-over has no maintenance obligation for the duration of its service life.

What fire rating does the GRP step-over carry?

All ECL GRP step-overs carry an independent fire classification of EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0. This classification confirms limited contribution to fire, minimal smoke production, and zero burning droplets or particles under fire conditions. The rating meets current UK Approved Document B requirements and is compatible with Network Rail standards. The GRP does not support combustion and does not require additional fire treatment.

What sizes are available and can custom sizes be ordered?

ECL stocks 14 standard sizes covering platform heights from 360mm to 1560mm in 200mm increments, across two standard spans of 1000mm and 1500mm. All standard models have an 800mm inside width. Custom configurations are available to order, including non-standard heights, wider platforms of 1000mm or greater, inclined stair approaches for uneven surfaces, extended spans, and alternative RAL colours. Contact the ECL technical team with your obstacle dimensions, required platform height, and span for a written quotation.

How is the GRP step-over installed?

The system arrives on site factory-assembled in two or three bolt-together sub-assemblies. Positioning and levelling is straightforward. All connections are by A4 stainless bolt only, no welding, grinding, or hot work permits are required. Pre-drilled GRP anchor plates at each stringer base accept M16 holding-down bolts compatible with chemical anchors, resin fixings, or expansion anchors depending on the substrate. A typical installation is completed by a two-person team in under two hours.

Which sectors use GRP step-over crossover systems?

The GRP step-over is specified across a broad range of industries where corrosion resistance, non-conductivity, or low maintenance are priorities. Common applications include trackside cable tray crossings and depot walkways in the rail sector, crossings over pipework and valve manifolds at water treatment works and pumping stations, factory access in chemical and pharmaceutical environments, non-conductive crossings in electrical substations, and corrosion-free crossings on marine jetties and offshore platforms. The system is also used in nuclear and defence installations where non-sparking and non-magnetic materials are required.
