GRP I-Beam Structural Profiles
Engineered Composites Engineered Composites supplies pultruded GRP I-beam sections manufactured to BS EN 13706 E23 grade, available in sizes from 120x70x8mm to 200x100x9.5mm and in 6m standard lengths. I-beams are the primary load-carrying profile in the GRP structural range, functioning as the GRP equivalent of universal steel beams for spanning and bending applications.
GRP I-beams are used as primary platform beams, walkway stringers, grating support beams, and framing members in environments where steel would corrode or create a conductivity hazard. At approximately one quarter of the weight of equivalent steel sections, they can be handled and installed on site without specialist lifting equipment, reducing installation time and programme cost.
Pultruded GRP I-Sections for Platform Beams, Walkway Stringers, and Structural Framing
GRP I-beam profiles combine the structural efficiency of the I-section shape with the corrosion resistance, electrical non-conductivity, and low maintenance performance of glass reinforced plastic. They are specified to BS EN 13706 E23 grade, confirming longitudinal flexural strength of 240 MPa and flexural modulus of 23 GPa from the performance-graded standard for pultruded profiles.
The profiles are designed for use in simply supported and continuous beam configurations. Lateral bracing should be provided in compression to prevent lateral torsional buckling, consistent with standard design practice for I-section profiles. Section property data is available from ECL for use in structural calculations.

Structural Performance Without the Maintenance
GRP I-beams carry load as efficiently as their steel equivalents while eliminating corrosion in aggressive environments. Over a 30-year platform design life, the whole-life cost advantage is substantial.
Non-Conductive for Sensitive Infrastructure
GRP I-beams are electrically non-conductive throughout their cross-section, making them the correct structural profile for trackside, substation, and data centre platform framing where steel would create an electrical hazard.
Lightweight for Faster Installation
At one quarter of steel's weight, GRP I-beams can be handled and positioned without cranes or heavy lifting equipment. This reduces programme time and simplifies installation in congested or elevated locations.
GRP I-Beams for Access Platforms, Rail Infrastructure, Water Treatment, and Data Centres
Access Platform Primary Beams
GRP I-beams are the primary beam section for ECL access platforms. Combined with GRP channel secondary beams and open mesh grating, they form a complete corrosion-free platform structure from a single supplier.
Rail Trackside Structures
RISQS accredited supply. Non-conductive GRP I-beams are used in trackside walkway and platform structures where steel creates third-rail or EMF risks. Yellow and grey profiles available.
Water Treatment Structures
GRP I-beams resist the chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, and biological chemicals found in water and wastewater treatment facilities without corrosion or degradation. No maintenance painting is ever required.
Data Centre Infrastructure
Fire-retardant grades available. Non-conductive and non-magnetic construction makes GRP I-beams suitable for data centre platform and cable management structures requiring electromagnetic compatibility.

GRP Profiles Application - Copenhagen Airport Blast Wall
To meet strict safety and security standards, Copenhagen Airport required a non-metallic blast wall system capable of resisting both structural shock and coastal corrosion. GRP structural profiles were chosen for their:
Non-conductive and non-sparking properties, essential near sensitive aviation equipment
High strength-to-weight ratio, making it easier to install on-site without large machinery
Modular design, allowing fast assembly using bolted fixings with minimal disruption to operations
Corrosion resistance, ideal for long-term durability in exposed, salty environments
This project highlights how GRP profiles can outperform traditional materials in aviation, security, and marine-exposed infrastructure projects.

What Clients Say About Our Company
EXCELLENT Based on 10 reviews Posted on Peter Nicholson20/04/2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The firm and staff were all excellent, the product was very well finished and all the advice given was very helpful, unfortunately it turned out to be of no use for my application, but this in no way reflects on the company that made an excellent product, I wanted a long tube to put an aerial inside it, fibreglass is normally transparent to radio signals, but something in the make up of the fibreglass tube was totally blocking the radio signals from getting out of the tube, the problem is possibly to do with the colouring agent, the tube I had was grey, darker colours can often cause problems for aerials, possibly if I'd chosen yellow, the other colour offered by the firm it may have worked well, but all this is my problem, not the company that made the tube, the tube is Very well made and nicely finished off, the staff could not have been more helpful, despite my problems this is a Highly Recommended firm.
